Glass does not negotiate
Steel forgives. If a post is out by a sixteenth you persuade it. Glass does not bend to meet a frame that is wrong — it either drops into the shoe or it does not, and the panel that does not fit is not adjusted, it is replaced.
Every panel here was a custom buyout, made by a glass manufacturer to our drawings. That is worth being plain about: the dimensions were ours. Nobody else in the chain was going to catch a panel size that was wrong, and a tempered laminated panel is weeks out, not days.
So the tolerance lives in the metal. An aluminum base shoe clad in stainless runs the length of every run, set and shimmed to the substrate before any glass arrives, because the shoe is the only part of the assembly that can be corrected on site.
The cap is 304 stainless in a #4 brushed satin finish, and the grain has to run continuously along hundreds of feet of rail that was fabricated in sections. A finish mismatch at a splice is visible from across a commons.
